For someone planning a destination wedding on Maui, the choices may
be overwhelming. What are the advantages of one wedding venue over another? Maui
wedding photographer Joanna Tano shares a few thoughts on this question.
Private Estates.Because private estates are private, the wedding
party has no other patrons to contend with. Usually you can choose your own
vendors, so the wedding will reflect your own vision. Private estates are quite
attractive, with luscious landscapes and some are near the ocean offering
majestic views perfect for maui wedding photography.
One reason to choose an estate locale is to save
money by providing your own food, alcohol or flower arrangements. In most
cases, you can pick your own wedding coordinator and vendors.
One drawback is estates are usuallyin remote
locales, so guests have to drive or be shuttled, when parking is limited. Also,
some private estates don't have indoorrooms in case of rain, so it's a good
idea to rent a tent.
Popular private estates are Oluwalu Plantation
House, Sugarman Estate in Makena, Haiku Mill, Kukahiko Estate in Makena, and Ka
Hale Olinda. Each has unique appeal, but all have beautiful scenery and
laid-back atmospheres.
Hotels.Hotels are terrific, withefficient staff and
coordinators who take care of every last detail. For guests, hotels are convenient,
since they can stay there; this is easier on families with children, people whodislikedriving
on unfamiliar roads, and anyone who is drinking. In case of rain, hotels can
move the wedding indoors. Overall, there
are fewer logistics to worry about.
A couple may want the convenience of the
hotel’s preferred vendor list. For example, the Four Seasons Resort only
recommendshighly reputable professional vendors. This takes a lot of anxiety out
of wedding planning. You still have choices if designing the wedding yourself, while
staying within the vendor list.
One drawback of a hotelis the higher cost;
alcoholic drinkscan be particularly pricy. But for the couple desiring a modern,
glamorous wedding experience, with maximum convenience for guests, hotel
weddings may be the ticket.
On Maui, most hotels offer luxury weddings. The
Four Seasons Resort Maui in Wailea, Kapalua Ritz-Carlton, Grand Wailea, and Kea
Lani in Wailea make wonderful venues.
RestaurantsA
number of fine restaurants host weddings. Usually less expensive than hotels or
privateestates, restaurants sometimes have separate areas for a wedding party,
and are particularly nice for small parties. Some have their own wedding coordinator
and preferred vendors, so check if that’s an important consideration.
Popular venues are Sarento’s on the Beach
(Kihei), Merriman'sKapalua, Kapalua
Plantation House, Gannon's and Capiche (both in Wailea). Though less private
than an estate wedding, you will have a memorable dining atmosphere with close
friends and family.
